Dr. Gottlieb's research program is focused on trying to understand the genetics of breast and prostate cancer by examining mutations in a particular gene called the androgen receptor. His hypothesis is that cancer might be a result of Darwinian selection that occurs inside the cellular structure of an individual organism. In other words, selection may be taking place at the micro level and not only at the species level.Â
