Expert: Discovery of new Earth-like planet could shed light on what makes a planet habitable

Published: 5 August 2024

In an exciting breakthrough for astronomy and the search for extraterrestrial life, a team of international scientists, including key support from Â鶹Çø researchers, has announced the discovery of Gliese 12 b, a temperate, Earth-sized exoplanet just 40 light-years away — a relatively neighbourly 378 trillion kilometres from earth. “Our discovery marks a step towards finding potentially habitable planets and understanding the conditions that make life possible. As one of the nearest planets that we can study in detail with the James Webb Space Telescope, Gliese 12 b provides a valuable opportunity to study the atmospheres and climates of worlds beyond our solar system.â€
