Recapping the 2nd Â鶹Çø Accounting Research Conference (MARC)
The 2nd Â鶹Çø Accounting Research Conference (MARC), organized by professors Hongping Tan, Dongyoung Lee, and Guang Ma at the Desautels Faculty of Management, reaffirmed the status of Â鶹Çø as one of the major research universities in Canada. It was successfully held virtually on May 27-28, 2021. In total, 275 participants from 125 institutions in 12 countries attended the conference, including 178 research professors, 89 PhD students, and 8 accounting professionals. Beginning in 2019, MARC is a biennial conference targeted to promoting discussions and interactions among academic researchers and practitioners from around the globe.
The 2021 conference featured Financial Accounting Standard Board member Christine Botosan and four renowned researchers—Mark Bradshaw (Boston College), Luzi Hail (University of Pennsylvania), Kevin Murphy (University of Southern California), and Ole-Kristian Hope (University of Toronto). Brian Wenzel (Â鶹Çø) and Michel Magnan (Concordia University) moderated the conference.
This year’s topics included accounting standard-setting, financial analyst and brokerage house, and CEO compensation and corporate governance. Led by four excellent discussants—Raphael Duguay (Yale University), Brian Cadman (University of Utah), Jenny Li Zhang (University of British Columbia), and Yaping Zheng (Â鶹Çø), the participants contributed to lively discussions on each speaker’s talk. Breakout room activities were organized at the end of each day to further facilitate discussions and interactions among presenters, discussants, and other participants.
The conference was well received by the participants. They were particularly impressed by the interesting topics/papers discussed in the conference and the breakout room interactions. The conference provides a precious platform for researchers to exchange ideas during the difficult pandemic time.
More detailed information about the conference can be found on the conference webpage.
